The latest financial figures for English football show that the national game is in debt to the tune of £3.1 billion.
United's debt stands at £699 million thanks to the Glazer takeover, just behind Chelsea at £701 million. Only a few years ago, Manchester United and Southampton stood as the only Premier League clubs who were technically solvent, but the latest report paints a bleak picture for English football.
Despite taking home the Premier League and Champions League trophies, United recorded a loss of £44.8m thanks to the interest payable on the Glazer loans. In the first three years of the Glazer ownership, £263 million has been paid out in interest on loans.
With 15 out of the 20 Premier League clubs relying on someone to bankroll them, any promoted team will struggle to survive unless they can attract a backer of their own. As United were bought with borrowed money, you do have to wonder what would happen should the astonishing success of the Ferguson era draw to a close, and those Champions League pay packets disappear.
